On Thursday (August 11th) extensive alterations started in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial.
Berlin’s State Secretary of Culture André Schmitz, Ingeborg Berggreen-Merkel, head of the Federal Culture Office, and Memorial-Director Hubertus Knabe symbolically tore down a wall to make room for a new permanent exhibition.
A modern visitor center, new meeting and seminar rooms, a bookstore and a café will be created in addition to the larger exhibition space.
The Bund and the State of Berlin bear the costs which add up to 16 million Euro. The alterations will be completed in autumn 2012. | back
