In remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin wall, GDR civil rights activist Freya Klier was received by US-president Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House during a defilee on June 7th. She is the first of ex-Hohenschönhausen detainees to receive this honor.

In 1968 after trying to escape from the GDR Freya Klier was sentenced to 16 month of imprisonment of which she was released prematurely. After her studies on play-acting the director Klier soon got involved with the GDR peace movement and called for reforms which led to an occupational ban. At the beginning of 1988 the Ministry of State Security arrested her again and forced her to expatriate. Today, Klier is working as a freelance author and film director. | back
