Karl-Heinz Richter
Karl-Heinz Richter was born in Schwarzheide in the Oberspreewald region in 1946. Ever since he went to school he had not been willing to submit to the disposal of the Communist dictatorship, which consequently led to his planning to escape from East Berlin by jumping onto a night train together with 7 other young people in 1964. However, he failed to catch the train, had to jump off a wall and got badly injured. A few days later, Karl Heinz Richter got arrested by members of the Ministry of State Security (MfS) and was taken to the remand prison of the MfS in Berlin – Pankow. He was sentenced to 8 months on grounds of “attempted illegal crossing of the border” (Republikflucht), but was released after 6 months in July 1964 because of his bad physical condition. After his prison stay he worked in different professions, and in 1975 he was able to leave the GDR with his family. Having lived abroad for a long time, he returned to Berlin in 2004 and since 2008 he has been a tour guide in the Berlin Hohenschönhausen Memorial. |
